The sound of Renault Symbioz

Inventing the sound of tomorrow’s car

For more than 10 years, Renault and IRCAM have collaborated together on sound design for the vehicles of tomorrow.

The manufacturer presented its vision of the future at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, where it unveiled its new Symbioz concept car.

The sound design of this electric and autonomous vehicle was developed as part of a collaborative effort between Renault (Innovation, Design) and IRCAM’s Sound Perception and Design research team, working together with the composer Andre Cera. They devised both the car’s external sound signature and the range of sound alerts inside the cockpit.

Planning out the interior of an autonomous car led to innovations in the field of human-machine interface (HMI) such as reconsidering the driver/passenger/cockpit interactions from every possible angle, and spatializing them differently according to driving style.

NB: Reference prior to the creation of Ircam Amplify that is emblematic of our universe’s “Sound as an Interface” offering and of IRCAM’s expertise.
